Project Overview
A comfortable indoor environment is essential for any fitness facility. When members are exercising, body heat and occupancy levels place significant demands on the HVAC system. Even small comfort issues can affect the member experience, especially during Florida’s hottest months.
This facility’s existing 20-ton system had developed a refrigerant leak, struggled to maintain comfortable temperatures, and wasn’t distributing conditioned air evenly throughout the building. The gym floor received some cooling, but the office and the room across the gym consistently remained warmer than the rest of the facility.
Instead of continuing to repair an aging system with underlying airflow problems, the customer chose a long-term solution designed to restore comfort throughout the entire building.
Work Performed
After evaluating the existing equipment, our team recommended replacing the system and correcting the airflow issues that were preventing balanced cooling.
The project included:
- Removal of the existing commercial HVAC system
- Installation of a new 20-ton Carrier split system
- New Carrier 38AXZM25 condenser
- New Carrier 40RLAA25 air handler
- Added electric heat for year-round comfort
- Installation of a new insulated supply plenum
- Re-routed both supply trunk lines for improved airflow distribution
- Corrected supply drops serving the office and the room across the gym
- Installed a new refrigerant line set
- Installed a new secondary drain pan with overflow safety protection
- Installed a Honeywell 8000 WiFi programmable thermostat
- System startup, testing, and performance verification
By correcting the ductwork while replacing the equipment, the new system was able to deliver balanced airflow throughout the entire facility rather than simply replacing the old unit.
