Project Summary
A commercial customer needed to relocate an existing walk-in cooler/freezer combination from one site to another without replacing equipment that was still operating properly. The project required much more than transporting the walk-in box. The refrigeration system had to be properly shut down and disconnected, the rooftop condenser removed, the entire walk-in prepared for crane lifting, and the equipment safely transported and set at its new location.
United Refrigeration Heating & Air coordinated the refrigeration work, rigging, crane move, transportation, placement, and recommissioning required to complete the relocation. Once the walk-in was set on the customer-prepared concrete pad, our technicians reconnected the refrigeration system, pressure-tested the new connections, evacuated the system to 500 microns, and verified proper operation.
The result was a complete relocation that allowed the customer to continue using their existing refrigeration equipment at its new location rather than replacing a system that still had useful service life remaining.

Project Overview
Relocating an existing walk-in cooler/freezer presents a different challenge than installing a new system. The equipment may already be operating properly, but every part of the refrigeration system and walk-in structure has to be protected throughout the move so it can be returned to reliable operation at the new site.
For this project, the customer wanted to move the complete walk-in cooler/freezer combination rather than replace it.
Before the walk-in could be moved, our technicians pumped the refrigerant down into the condenser and disconnected the refrigerant lines. The rooftop condenser also had to be removed to protect the equipment during transportation and keep the overall load within transport height requirements.
The walk-in structure was then raised and blocked so lifting straps could be positioned at three designated points. Working with the crane operation, the complete walk-in was lifted onto our trailer, secured for transportation, and moved to the new site.
At the new location, the process was reversed. The walk-in was lifted from the trailer and carefully lowered onto a customer-prepared concrete pad before the refrigeration equipment was reconnected and recommissioned.
The goal wasn’t simply to get the equipment from one location to another. It was to complete the move in a way that protected the existing system and returned it to proper operation once the relocation was complete.
Work Performed
To complete the project, our commercial refrigeration technicians:
- Pumped the refrigerant down into the condenser before disconnecting the existing refrigeration piping.
- Disconnected and prepared the refrigeration equipment for relocation.
- Removed the rooftop condenser to protect the equipment and accommodate transportation requirements.
- Raised and blocked the walk-in structure in preparation for crane lifting.
- Positioned lifting straps at three designated points to safely support the walk-in during the move.
- Coordinated the crane lift and placement of the complete walk-in cooler/freezer onto our trailer.
- Secured the equipment for transportation to the new location.
- Transported the walk-in cooler/freezer to the customer’s new site.
- Coordinated the second crane lift and carefully positioned the walk-in on the customer-prepared concrete pad.
- Reconnected the refrigeration piping and installed a new liquid line drier.
- Pressure-tested the completed refrigerant connections with nitrogen to verify that the new welds were leak-free.
- Evacuated the refrigeration system to 500 microns to remove moisture, air, and other non-condensables before startup.
- Checked system operation and refrigerant pressures to verify that the refrigeration equipment was operating properly after the move.
- Coordinated with the customer’s licensed electrician, who completed the final electrical reconnection.
Results Delivered
The completed project allowed the customer to relocate an existing walk-in cooler/freezer and return it to service at its new location without unnecessarily replacing refrigeration equipment that was still functioning properly.
By coordinating the refrigeration work, equipment preparation, rigging, crane logistics, transportation, placement, and recommissioning as one project, United helped simplify what could otherwise have required the customer to manage several separate contractors.
Just as important, the project didn’t end when the walk-in reached the new site. After placement, the refrigeration system was properly reconnected, pressure-tested, evacuated, started, and checked for correct operation.
